Goodyear Tires Sign, 1927-1935

Artifact Overview

Frank Seiberling founded Goodyear Tire & Rubber in Akron, Ohio, in 1898. Though named for Charles Goodyear, who patented a rubber vulcanization process in 1844, the company had no direct ties to the inventor. The company adopted its "wingfoot" mascot in 1901. The design was inspired by a statue of Mercury that depicted the Roman god wearing winged sandals.
