In January 1940, Ford Motor Company cars were driven 306 miles from Los Angeles to Yosemite National Park. Gilmore Oil Company sponsored the economy run, which demonstrated high fuel economy among participating vehicles. A Mercury V-8 achieved 23.76 miles per gallon, while a Lincoln Zephyr V-12 scored 19.9 miles per gallon. Each car won its respective class.
