Artifact Overview

From 1895-1924, Detroit Publishing Company was one of the world's major image publishers. Its wide-ranging stock of original photographs included scenes from around the globe. Detroit Shipbuilding Company launched the Merton E. Farr in 1920. Workers built the 587-foot-long freighter using surplus materials from a World War I shipbuilding program. The vessel was scrapped in 1970.
