Swiss watchmaker Rolex has long been known for its expensive, high quality wristwatches. Rolex's "Oyster" -- the first waterproof wristwatch -- was introduced in 1923. Rolex watches, long regarded as status symbols, became a popular luxury good purchased by middle-class Americans during the expanding economy of the 1980s and 1990s.
