This early 1830s engraving illustrates a canal boat going through a lock on the Erie Canal near Little Falls, New York. The Little Falls Canal, built to bypass the rapids on the Mohawk River in the late 1790s, was the first canal built in New York State and eventually was absorbed by the Erie Canal.
