Incumbent Democratic vice president Albert Gore, Jr. easily won his party's primaries and presidential nomination in 2000. He chose Connecticut Senator Joseph Lieberman as his running mate -- Lieberman became the first Jewish American part of a major party ticket. Though Gore won the popular vote, he narrowly lost the electoral vote to George W. Bush.
