Postcard, "Dexter Avenue from Courthouse Square Fountain to the State Capitol, Montgomery, Alabama," 1954

01

Artifact Overview

This 1950s postcard shows a typical Montgomery, Alabama, city bus. The Henry Ford uses images like this to help document the Rosa Parks Bus, which it acquired in 2001. On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white man on a Montgomery bus. Her courageous act of protest was considered the spark that ignited the Civil Rights movement.
