The flat, smooth sand beach at Atlantic City, New Jersey, hosted several early automobile races. The Atlantic City Automobile Club organized the first competition there in 1905. This first-place trophy, for the one-mile race in the heavyweight cars division, went to Charles Bacharach and his 28-horsepower Packard. Bacharach covered the mile in 1 minute and 15 seconds.
