Harrison Rose Floral Urn Quilt by Susan McCord, circa 1860

01

Artifact Overview

Indiana farmwife Susan McCord made this mid-19th century showpiece, using the red and green color scheme popular then. The large flower design in the urn's center is known as the Harrison Rose. William Henry Harrison was Indiana's first territorial governor and the ninth U.S. President. Susan's fine stitching in white thread, 10 to 12 per inch, holds the layers of this quilt together.
