Button, "Black is Beautiful," circa 1970
01
Artifact Overview
Continued frustration with discrimination and slow economic gains in the mid- to late-1960s convinced many African Americans to take action to empower themselves. This "Black is Beautiful" slogan encouraged African Americans to embrace black-defined culture and beauty, rather than letting white society dictate social and physical norms.
