Porter Assisting Clara Ford as She Steps Down from a Train, circa 1940

01

Artifact Overview

Clara and Henry Ford frequently traveled by railroad for business and pleasure. As Henry's fame grew in the 1910s, such journeys became difficult due to pestering reporters and crowding admirers. The Fords took delivery of a private railroad car, Fair Lane, in 1921. They made more than 400 trips with the car before selling it in 1942.
