Eighteen-century Americans from all levels of society consumed punch at events, such as births, weddings, funerals, etc. The drink usually consisted of alcohol (mainly rum), citrus juice, sugar, and water. Punch bowls were a necessary part of a host's table setting. Depending on one's economic status, Americans owned punchbowls made of decorated ceramic, pewter, or silver, like this one.
