Artifact Overview

James "Deacon" White was a prominent baseball player from the 1860s to the 1880s. The future hall of famer created this scrapbook during his time playing for the Cleveland Forest Citys. White is believed to be the first player to receive a "most valuable player" award (in 1875 with Boston), and is also credited with being the first player to use a catcher's mask in game play.
