Ford Motor Company Shop Coat, 1930-1932
01
Artifact Overview
The first auto mechanics came from varied backgrounds -- blacksmiths, machinists, plumbers -- but the field had professionalized by the early 1930s. In addition to specialized training, larger factory service departments encouraged their employees to have a professional appearance. Uniform shop coats were a must. Some departments even required their mechanics to wear neckties underneath their coats.
