Artifact Overview
In the late 1930s, Ruth Wakefield invented the chocolate chip cookie when she chopped up a Nestle's semisweet chocolate bar and added the pieces to her sweet cookie batter. The cookies were so popular that Nestle developed individual semisweet morsels that didn't need to be cut up. Other companies soon developed their own morsels, including Hershey, who called its product "dainties."
