Herb Peterson, owner of a Santa Barbara McDonald's franchise, introduced the Egg McMuffin breakfast sandwich in 1972. This invention opened up the entire fast food breakfast market. The polystyrene "clamshell" box, considered superior over paper packaging for its insulation and protection of the food inside, was phased out in 1990 for its harmful effects on the environment.
