Clara Ford, whose husband, Henry, owned land for logging and mining along Kentucky's Red Bird River, funded a Frontier Nursing Service center to provide midwives and other medical services for area residents. The healthy baby girl pictured here -- named after the center's benefactor -- was the first child delivered by a nurse from the Clara Ford Nursing Center.
