The twenty-second running of the Indianapolis 500 took place on May 30, 1934. Indianapolis-born Bill Cummings drove the #7 Boyle Products Special to victory at an average speed of 104.863 miles per hour -- and earned himself a $29,000 payday in the process. Mechanical problems troubled many of the contestants. Only 12 of the 33 qualifying cars finished the race.
