The thirty-third running of the Indianapolis 500 was held on May 30, 1949. Pennsylvania-born Bill Holland took the checkered flag in the Blue Crown Spark Plug Special. It was an especially sweet victory for Holland, who had finished second in the previous two Indy 500 races. Holland would take second place again in 1950.
