Wood was an integral part of early station wagon body construction. But in 1949 the first all-metal station wagon appeared. In the 1950s, car designers applied simulated wood grain panels, usually made of vinyl or another plastic product, to the steel-bodied vehicles. This advertisement shows the spacious 1957 Ford Country Squire with its printed vinyl sides.
