"Steamer Manitou at Dock, Mackinac Island, Michigan," circa 1905

01

Artifact Overview

Mackinac Island began to attract more and more tourists as its fishing industry waned in the 1870s. The building of the high-class Grand Hotel in 1887 assured that the island would become a destination for the wealthy. The steamer Manitou began service from Chicago in 1893, making the trip in 24 hours and offering three round trips weekly.
