Artifact Overview

When Nantucket Island's prosperous whaling era ended in the mid-19th century, the island "reinvented" itself as a summer resort for the middle class. People wishing to enjoy sea bathing and cooling breezes could travel by steamship to this island 30 miles off Cape Cod. Buying a souvenir viewbook reminded travelers of the pleasures of "getting away," long after their vacations ended.
