Artifact Overview
An engraving in this volume of Harper's Weekly shows well-to-do families attending an 1886 horse race in horse-drawn carriages. For some families the top of the coaches provided a perch for viewing the race and a private space for food and drink. Others socialized picnic-style and viewed the race from the rail. This scene has similarities to the tailgaters of today.
