Saint Augustine, Florida, dating back to Spanish occupation in the 1500s, became a popular winter resort for wealthy northerners in the 1880s, when the railroad came through town. By the 1950s, motorists of all sorts had clearly replaced those earlier elite vacationers, intent on enjoying the long stretch of sunny beach.
