Interior of the Former Michigan Theatre, Detroit, Michigan, April 1995

Artifact Overview

When developers realized that tearing down the once-ornate but long-neglected Michigan Theatre (built 1928) would jeopardize the stability of the adjoining office building, an unusual but creative solution was devised: turn it into a parking garage! Photographer Camilo J. Vergara (born 1944) is a Chilean-born, New York-based writer and photographer who documents declining urban environments.
