George Devol was a prolific inventor. In 1938, he received a design patent for a lighting fixture. United Cinephone Corporation -- the company Devol created in the 1930s -- sold the fixture through the trademarked name of Orthoplane. His design promised "more working light per watt" and could be used in a variety of locations.
