George Devol invented an automatic door in the 1930s. His invention -- licensed to Yale and Towne Manufacturing Company and named the "Phantom Doorman" -- eased the flow of people and material in and out of buildings and workspaces. Devol was a prolific inventor -- particularly in the area of automation. His most important work led to his patent for the first industrial robot.
