American Airlines was formed by a merger of several smaller carriers in 1930. Six years later, it became the first airline to operate the revolutionary Douglas DC-3. American Airlines began service to Europe after World War II and introduced its first transcontinental jets in 1959. By the 21st century, American Airlines served over 170 destinations in more than 40 countries.
