President Barack Obama was reelected to a second term in 2012. Obama assembled a coalition of African Americans, Latinos, women, blue-collar progressives and other ethnic, economic and minority groups to defeat Mitt Romney, his Republican challenger. Obama's backing of same-sex marriage and other civil rights issues helped garner the support of the LGBT -- Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender -- community.
