Activity in Garage Area, Indianapolis Speedway, 1913

Indianapolis Motor Speedway opened in 1909 and hosted the first Indianapolis 500 two years later. The track's early garage facilities were basic and resembled horse stables more than automobile shops. Wooden garages endured at the speedway for decades before they were replaced with concrete structures in 1986. The garage area has long been known by its nickname, "Gasoline Alley."
