Nothing symbolizes drag racing quite like the "Christmas tree" -- the series of descending lights that starts a race. The Christmas tree debuted in NHRA competition at the 1963 U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis. The electronic system replaced human flaggers, which both removed people from a dangerous position and ensured consistent starts.
