In 1989, management specialist W. Edwards Deming (left) received the first-ever Edison-Ford Medal in recognition of his lifelong contribution to the spirit of American ingenuity, innovation and enterprise. Deming pioneered the quality-control movement, particularly in Japan where he advised industrialists rebuilding after World War II. Deming also shared his teachings with American manufacturers like Ford Motor Company.
