Willa Wright, Stenographer for Writer and Reporter Edgar White, Hudson, Missouri, circa 1910

Artifact Overview

By 1900, women made up more than a third of clerical workers. For women, there were few professional job opportunities, outside of nursing and teaching, so literate women often turned to office work. In the early 1900s, Willa Wright worked as a stenographer for Edgar White, a newspaper and magazine writer in Hudson, Missouri. Later, she became a clerk in a Chicago brokerage office.
