President Lincoln's assassination on April 14, 1865, plunged Americans into deep mourning. After the funeral in Washington, D.C., a special train bore his coffin to Springfield, Illinois. As the train took its circuitous route through many northern cities, millions of people came out to honor their fallen leader. The train finally reached Springfield nearly two weeks after departing the capital.
