Chicago was the railroad capital of the United States, where the trunk roads of the East met the mainlines of the West. The city was home to six major stations serving various railroads. Dearborn Street Station, opened in 1885, hosted passenger trains of the Santa Fe, Grand Trunk Western, Wabash, Erie, and Chesapeake & Ohio railroads, among others.
