Australian driver Jack Brabham competed in the 1961 Indianapolis 500 with the #17 Kimberly Cooper Special. The car, formally designated a Cooper-Climax T54, was based on Formula One design and engineering. Its low-slung body and rear-engine layout were unlike other cars at Indy that year. Brabham qualified at 145.144 mph, and he earned a ninth-place finish in the race.
