Artifact Overview

British engineer and designer Colin Chapman formed Team Lotus in 1952. Unlike rival Formula One builders, his cars emphasized light weight and agile handling over brute horsepower. Chapman and driver Jim Clark revolutionized the Indianapolis 500 with the rear-engine Lotus 38, which won in 1965. Chapman's innovations, including monocoque chassis construction and aerodynamic ground effects, continue to influence race car design.
