Body-worn cameras are meant to increase transparency and accountability between law enforcement and civilians. Promotion of this technology coincided with the rise of social unrest in Ferguson, Missouri, and the Black Lives Matter activist campaign, which protested the deaths of several African-American citizens under police restraint. Government grants encouraged adoption of these cameras in police departments beginning in 2015.
