SS Kroonland Through the Panama Canal, February 1915

01

Artifact Overview

After 33 years of on-and-off work by French and American crews, the Panama Canal opened to traffic in 1914. The 48-mile waterway, connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, saved nearly 8,000 miles versus sailing around the southern tip of South America. The SS Kroonland is pictured here in Culebra Cut, which carried the canal through Panama's Continental Divide.
