01

Artifact Overview

"Hands Across America" was an ambitious effort to alleviate hunger and homelessness in the United States. On May 25, 1986, millions of ordinary citizens joined hands to create a human chain stretching from New York to Los Angeles. Even though large gaps occurred and donations fell well short of projected goals, the event raised awareness about America's growing economic and social disparity.
