British minister Wilbert Awdry published his first Railway Series book in 1946. Characters from the stories, like Thomas the Tank Engine, appeared in dozens more books, on television, and in movies. Beginning in 2002, the "Day Out With Thomas" program brought a full-size Thomas steam locomotive to Greenfield Village, allowing children to ride behind the beloved engine.
