Press Release, "Special Rig Shortens Pit Stops," 1969
01
Artifact Overview
In 1969, Team Penske and Sunoco built a special rig to speed refueling. The 19-foot tower held barrels containing fuel, dry ice and acetone. Cooling the fuel contracted it, allowing the team to fit 23 gallons into a 22-gallon car tank. Over a long race, that extra fuel could eliminate a pit stop. Trans-Am officials ultimately outlawed the tall rig.
