Royal Mail First Day Cover, October 13, 1982, "Ford No. 1 B.T.H. Diesel Electric 1932-1982"

01

Artifact Overview

Diesel-electric locomotives offered several advantages over their steam-powered counterparts. They used less fuel, required less maintenance, and could be operated by smaller crews. They were particularly well suited to yard service like switching railcars around an industrial plant. This postal cover commemorates the 50th anniversary of a British-built locomotive used at Ford Motor Company's Dagenham plant near London.
