Artifact Overview

The 47th running of the Indianapolis 500 took place on Thursday, May 30, 1963. Thirty-three cars started the event, and 14 managed to finish all 500 miles. Parnelli Jones took the checkered flag, though not without controversy. His Offenhauser-powered #98 car developed a dangerous oil leak during the race, which some drivers and commentators believed should have disqualified Jones.
