Eshelman Red Rose Feed Sign
01
Artifact Overview
Farm families must feed their livestock as well as themselves. They often need more (and better quality) animal feed than they can produce. Specialized businesses emerged in the nineteenth century to serve that need. Eshelman Feed, distinguished by its "Red Rose" trademark and "guaranteed feed" slogan, was reputedly the oldest animal feed business in the United States, founded in 1842 and in business until 2010.

Eggs are familiar. They're available nearly everywhere Americans shop for food and appear daily on menus at homes and restaurants across the country. What's less familiar is the story of their rise from products of the family farm to a major agricultural commodity. This group of artifacts helps document that story, revealing important developments in egg production and distribution and exploring consumers' evolving relationship with eggs.
