In May 1951, Henry Ford II, president of Ford Motor Company, wrote to Norman Rockwell about a project to create a series of illustrations for a calendar celebrating the auto company's 50th anniversary in 1953. Rockwell agreed and before the end of 1952 created eight paintings for the project.
