Artifact Overview

Joshua Cohen (1801-1870) collected autographs, historical documents, and colonial and Continental currency. Cohen, who lived in Baltimore, Maryland, corresponded and traded with other well-known 19th-century collectors from around the U.S. to amass his fine collection. In this letter, Ferdinand Dreer, an autograph collector from Pennsylvania, thanks Cohen for sending a letter signed by naval officer Oliver Hazard Perry.

J I Cohen Esq

My Dear Sir

On my return from N York on Sunday night I found on my table your esteemed favor with letter of O H Perry[.] I am glad to have it as it goes to compleate [sic] my collection of naval officers, I find that I do not possess a letter of J. Barney[,] I have only a signed document and should like to possess a written letter of his.  I take pleasure in sending you a good specimen of the Duke's[.] I obtained two of them before his death[;] they are now very scarce & dear[.]
In looking over my signers I find but one letter of Hopkinson and one a signed document, the duplicate I sent to Easton some time ago.
Have you a letter of Lynch Jr I have only his signature?  When you visit our city again please bring with you such letters as you can spare[,] we may possibly make an exchange to our mutual benefits. In looking over the Continental currency I find that there is nothing [continues in left margin] but what you already have[.] I remain with much respect Truly yours
Ferd J. Dreer
