Artifact Overview

Photographer Dave Friedman captured and preserved auto racing history. His work -- and his collection of works by other photographers -- documents key races, cars, and drivers. This photo is from the 1964 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, where driver Al Unser broke the existing speed record and finished first overall. Pikes Peak is called the "Race to the Clouds" because of its steep mountain route.
