After adding more cream while making Neufchatel cheese (a creamy white cheese from France) New York dairy farmer William Lawrence discovered cream cheese and became the first to manufacture it in 1872. In 1880, the product was branded as Philadelphia Cream Cheese and its popularity prompted many creative uses over time. This booklet from 1960 includes recipes for using cream cheese in party dips.
