Cigarette smoking was commonplace during the mid-20th century, and free matchbooks for customers also promised free advertising. The Ocean Diner, located near several routes to and from the Jersey Shore, offered turkey dinners along with daily specials. Customers were advised to tell their friends if they liked the place but to inform the diner operator if they did not.
